October Newsletter: Prioritising Mental Health and Wellbeing 2024

Updated: Oct 3, 2024

October

As the year begins to wind down and we find ourselves reflecting on what’s been, October is a wonderful opportunity to pause, take a breath, and turn our focus inward. With the busy months behind us and the holiday rush still a little way off, it’s the perfect time to remind ourselves that caring for our minds is just as important as caring for our bodies.

This month, we’re embracing Mental Health Awareness—a gentle nudge to check in with how we’re really feeling and make space for self-care, connection, and support.

Here are a few ideas to prioritise mental wellbeing this month:

  • Create a Daily Check-In Routine: Take just 5 minutes each day to ask yourself, “How am I really feeling?” Write down a few words or journal about what’s on your mind.

  • Set Boundaries to Protect Your Energy: Say “no” to one task or commitment that feels overwhelming and replace it with a moment of rest or an activity that recharges you.

  • Reconnect with Nature: Whether it’s a short walk in the park, a trip to Kings Park, or simply sitting outside with a cup of tea, let nature help ground and relax your mind.

  • Reach Out to Someone: If a friend or loved one has been on your mind, send them a quick message to let them know you’re thinking of them. Sometimes, a small gesture can make a world of difference.

  • Make Time for a Hobby You Love: Pick up that book you’ve been wanting to read, get creative in the kitchen, or spend time on a craft you enjoy—whatever brings you joy, make time for it!

Latest NDIS Changes October 2024

From 3rd October 2024, significant changes have been introduced to the NDIS, focusing on providing greater clarity and improving participant experience. These updates are part of the Australian Government’s efforts to make the scheme more sustainable and better aligned with its original intent. Here are some of the key changes and what they mean for participants:

1. New Definition of NDIS Supports

A new definition has been introduced to clearly outline what NDIS funding can and cannot be used for. This update is intended to reduce confusion and ensure that participants have a clear understanding of how their funds can be spent. For the next 12 months, there will be a transition period to help participants adjust to these changes without penalties for minor mistakes.

2. Plan Management Adjustments

The NDIA now has the authority to change how a participant’s plan is managed if funds are not being used as intended. This could mean switching from Plan Managed or Self-Managed to NDIA Managed in certain situations. Additionally, all new plans created after 3rd October 2024 will be structured with 12-month funding periods, and participants will be able to access only a proportion of their funds at a time, aimed at promoting better budgeting and planning.

3. New Budgeting & Planning Rules

Budgets will now be displayed as total amounts rather than being broken down into smaller line items. This change is meant to provide a clearer overview of a participant’s funds and simplify how budgets are managed across the lifespan of the plan.

4. Compliance and Oversight

The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission has been given strengthened powers to ensure compliance and participant safety. New measures include the ability to raise debts for misused funds and request additional information for eligibility reassessment.

5. Transition to New Framework Plans

Over the next five years, all participants will transition to what is being called “new framework plans.” These plans will involve more flexible budgets and needs-based assessments to ensure support aligns with each participant’s unique requirements

6. Impairment Notices

From January 2025, the NDIA will begin issuing impairment notices for new participants, outlining the specific impairments that qualify them for NDIS supports. Existing participants will receive these notices when they transition to the new framework plans

These changes represent a major shift in how the NDIS is managed and delivered, with a strong focus on making the scheme clearer and more participant-centric. For more detailed information, you can visit the NDIS official website or contact your plan manager for personalised advice.

Meaningful Connections Matter 💬❤️

When it comes to mental health, meaningful connections can make all the difference. Humans are naturally social beings, and our relationships play a crucial role in maintaining emotional balance and resilience. Whether it’s sharing a cup of tea with a friend, having an honest conversation, or simply reaching out with a thoughtful message, these moments of connection help build a strong foundation for our wellbeing.

This month, try making time for the people who bring joy and support into your life. It could be as simple as planning a coffee catch-up, taking a walk together, or offering a listening ear to someone in need. When we show up for others, we remind them (and ourselves) that we’re not alone in our struggles. Let’s use October to strengthen our bonds and create a supportive circle that uplifts and empowers us all. 💙🌿

Quick Tips for Building Meaningful Connections:

  1. Reach Out First: Take the initiative to check in on someone you haven’t spoken to in a while.

  2. Be Present: Give your full attention—put away distractions and show genuine interest in what they’re sharing.

  3. Share Vulnerably: Open up about your own experiences, which can encourage others to do the same.

  4. Create Rituals: Establish regular catch-ups, weekly walks, or even virtual chats that become something to look forward to.

Meaningful connections are powerful—they remind us of our shared humanity and help us weather life’s ups and downs together. This October, let’s prioritise not just self-care, but community care as well. 💫

Quote of the Month

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” — Alan Watts

This quote is a wonderful reminder to embrace life’s changes with openness and curiosity. October, with its focus on mental health and transition, is the perfect time to reflect on how we can flow with the shifts in our lives rather than resist them. Whether it’s a new opportunity or an unexpected challenge, moving through change with a positive mindset can help us grow and find new strengths within ourselves. Let’s use this month to let go of fear and step into new possibilities with grace and resilience.

October Goal 🏅

The 5-Minute Daily Journal 📝

This month, we challenge you to start a 5-Minute Daily Journal. Each day, spend just 5 minutes jotting down:

  • One thing you’re grateful for

  • One positive thing that happened today

  • One thing you’re looking forward to tomorrow

At the end of the month, look back and see how small reflections can create a big impact!

Gratitude Corner 🌻

This October, we’re grateful for the incredible resilience and support within our community. As we navigate changes together, it’s heartening to see so many stepping up to support one another. Take a moment today to reach out to someone who’s made a difference in your life and let them know you appreciate them!

Something to Try: Start a Mini Herb Garden 🌱

This October, try your hand at a relaxing, low-maintenance hobby by starting a mini herb garden—perfect for adding some greenery to your space and boosting your wellbeing. Gardening has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and give you a sense of accomplishment as you watch your herbs flourish. Plus, you’ll have fresh herbs at your fingertips for cooking!

What You’ll Need:

  • Small pots or containers: You can use traditional pots or get creative with recycled jars and cups.

  • Herb seeds or seedlings: Start with beginner-friendly herbs like basil, parsley, mint, or thyme.

  • Potting mix: Choose a good-quality potting soil that drains well.

  • Watering can or spray bottle: For regular, gentle watering.

Steps to Get Started:

  1. Pick Your Herbs: Choose herbs based on your preferences and how much sunlight your space gets. Basil and mint are great for beginners!

  2. Pot Them Up: Fill your pots with soil, plant your seeds or seedlings, and water them lightly.

  3. Find the Right Spot: Place your herb garden in a sunny spot, like a windowsill, balcony, or patio.

  4. Keep Them Happy: Check daily to ensure your herbs are watered and getting the right amount of light. Trim them regularly to encourage growth.

Closing Thoughts

October is all about creating space for self-reflection and prioritising our mental wellbeing. As we wrap up this month’s focus on mental health, I encourage you to take a moment to acknowledge your progress and celebrate the small steps you’ve taken. Whether it’s been making time for a daily check-in, reaching out to someone in need, or simply being kinder to yourself, every positive action counts. Remember, mental health is a journey, not a destination. Let’s continue to nurture our minds, support each other, and carry this awareness forward into the coming months. Stay connected, stay grounded, and be gentle with yourself—you’re doing better than you think! 💙
